Choristers in Concert
Where else in Malvern could you enjoy the music of Radiohead, Debussy, Gilbert and Sullivan and Hisaishi and much more, all rounded off with a pop cantata, a delicious finger buffet and The Raffle?
It must be the annual Choristers in Concert evening, making a welcome return to the level Priory nave floor after last year’s temporary residency in the wonderful Malvern College St Edmund’s Hall, during the Priory floor levelling works.
A large audience of family, friends, choir supporters cheered on the talented youngsters who entertained on piano, violin and, of course, voice. Some were ABRSM Grade pieces - which ranged from Grade 1 to Grade 8, others included busking favourites, delivered with panache, by an experienced busker, complete with a three-axle stair-climbing shopping trolley to hold her speaker and mic. Every piece was delivered with style and received with enthusiasm.
The musical component of the evening drew to a close with a rousing rendition from all the choristers of ‘Swingin’ Sampson’. Piers, the Priory’s Musical Director, told the audience he’d searched far and wide to cast a suitable narrator, and had successfully recruited none other than…Roger, the new Priory Vicar, who, it turns out, had sung ‘Swingin’ Sampson’ himself, in his youth.
Congratulations and excitement filled the Priory as the delicious finger buffet was enjoyed - with enough left for seconds. Then it was time for the raffle, compered, as ever, with wry humour, by Alistair. Prizewinners were delighted with their winnings - from a jigsaw puzzle, to chocolates and much, much more. Every penny raised goes towards supporting the annual Junior Choristers’ Camp in September.
Thank you to the Priory Junior Choristers and Piers for sharing your talents in a fantastic evening of entertainment, but more importantly for all you do leading music during worship in the Priory.
