Joists away!
The nave continues to be a hive of activity as the workers carefully clear away the existing floor.
With the floorboards removed, today the joists and wooden kerbs - yes those kerbs that made the step up and which everyone tripped up or fell off - were taken away.
Now the cables from the sound and vision system can be seen clearly. So, too, can the gas pipes that once fed the gas lighting system, enjoyed as a modern convenience by congregations in years gone by.
And it’s lovely to see the sunshine throwing the colours of the clerestory stained glass onto the Romanesque pillars.
Visitors are very welcome to come and see the works in real time - the East end of the Priory is now open. Entry is via the accessible entrance, which is helpfully signed.
Once inside you can view the nave through windows cut into the protective hoardings. There’s plenty more to see, too - the misericords, the Mediaeval tiles and the very fine Mediaeval stained glass. We look forward to welcoming you soon.
