Mothering Sunday

‘Mums are everywhere, just like bread…but do we have a ‘Bread Day’ or a ‘Bakers’ Day’? Roger quizzed the children. ‘What makes mums so special?’
’She helps me when I’m hurt’
’She helps me wash things’
’She turns me upside down’
came the gloriously varied replies, eliciting both murmurs of approval and laughter from the congregation.

’Every mum’s a hero. Being born’s no easy thing. That’s what makes mums so special.’ Roger explained, then going on to point out how the story of Moses in the Nile was all about women making hard choices, just as Hagar, Hannah and Mary, mother of Jesus had. And all that motherly love is a reflection of just a tiny fraction of God’s love for each one of us. ‘Thanks be to God and thanks be to mums’ He ended.

The Junior Choristers sang a beautiful setting of the prayer of St Anselm, written by Piers, the Priory’s Musical Director. A treat in itself. But what made it even more special, was the confident conducting of the anthem - both choir and organ - by one of the Junior Choristers, making her debut as conductor. Surely just the beginning of a very promising career.

As coffee was served in St Giles’ Chapel after the service, so the children were able to enjoy an exciting new craft table following the theme of the service. Glue, felt tips and mothers’ helping hands helped to produce beautiful individual ‘flowers’. A beautiful personalised Mothering Sunday gift for mum, ready to stick to the fridge, or add to the memory box.

The latest edition of the Priory Magazine, featuring Roger’s inauguration, proved very popular, as did the daffodils for everyone, not just mums, as they went out into the bright, warm, Malvern spring sunshine.
