30 years of Priestly ministry
Midsummer’s Eve 2024, and the bells of Pershore Abbey rang out joyfully into the warm evening air. Folk streamed into the ancient building from all directions, for the Diocesan Celebration of Ministry with Thanksgiving for the 30th Anniversary of the Ordination of Women as Priests in the Diocese of Worcester.
’The Tower Captain told me to let you know that every member of the band who rang the bells this evening was a woman’ shared the Rev Claire Lording, Vicar of Pershore Abbey. The congregation murmured their appreciation.
Bishop Martin who was unable to attend, sent a supportive voice message telling of his sadness that those who were ordained Deacon at the same time as him had to wait so long before they could be ordained priest.
Bishop John, who managed to attend, despite the vagaries of the rail service, gave a supportive and thought-provoking sermon. These days, he told us, it feels strange to him when clergy gatherings are men-only. He gave thanks for those who prayed and campaigned and worked so that the Church of England’s priests could reflect God’s people.
Two ordained women, one who celebrated her 30th anniversary of Priestly ordination this year, and one who will be ordained priest ‘in 8 days and 20 hours time. No, I’m not counting’ shared their experiences. When asked what advice the seasoned priest would give to the next generation, she said simply ‘Enjoy’.
Voices raised in joyful song
’Hope of our calling: hope through courage won;
by those who dared to share all Christ had done.
Saints of today, Christ’s banner now unfurled,
we bring his gospel to a waiting world.’
…and the Archdeacon of Dudley, Ven Nikki Groarke, led the congregation in prayer.
Whilst the organ voluntary played, all the ordained women present gathered for a group photo, before catching up over Cava and cake.
And the Priory’s connection? Amongst those very first women to be ordained Priest in Worcester Cathedral, in May 1994, was Marje Stanton-Hyde, who ministers and worships at the Priory.
Congratulations, and may God bless you, Marje.
