But where are the Magi?

Epiphany…a time of journeys…

For what is maybe the first time, the Priory 10.30am congregation journeyed too, en masse, to the beautiful Chapel at Malvern College. By now, if you’ve been following the blog, you’ll probably (hopefully!) know why…the nave at the Priory is closed to level the floor. (see calendar for details)

At the College there were welcomers aplenty, at every entry point, smiling, encouraging, pointing the way, inside and out; those outside bringing warmth to the bracing sunny morning with their enthusiasm.

There was an uplifting feeling of ‘we can do this’, as the choir assembled for a quick pre-service rehearsal, the organist found his way around the Chapel’s three manual Willis organ, the Priory service leaflets and weekly notice sheet were handed to the congregation as they streamed through the doors. Back ‘on the ranch’ at the Priory North Porch, a lone volunteer was busy explaining, to those who needed a quick reminder, where the service would be and how to get there.

All was in place. A different place perhaps, but definitely in place. Except… where were the Magi?

In the Bible we’re told that they first arrived at Jerusalem to enquire the location of the new-born saviour of the world. The Priory Magi traditionally make their way around the building from Advent onwards, moving ever closer, ready to arrive at the Priory crib at Epiphany.

And they definitely had travelled this year, but not to the crib. They’d gone to Leigh Sinton, to storage, where they’ll safely remain until Easter.

But all was not lost. Malvern College came to the rescue again, with a beautiful set of three magi who joined the nativity in Chapel, completing the scene for Christmas 2023.

After the service the sound of happy voices enjoying coffee filled the main entrance of the College and could be heard the length of the corridor.

Thank you to Malvern College for the Priory’s temporary home at 10.30am for the next twelve weeks. Do join us for worship at the College Chapel at 10.30 on Sunday mornings. And don’t worry if you’ll be late - there’s a fantastic, discreet, back way in to the Chapel nave once you’re inside. No one will ever know!

But maybe you’ll be joining us tonight at 6.30pm in the Priory for the Epiphany Carol Service, in the chancel? Everyone’s welcome. There’ll be fabulous, regal music from the choir accompanied on the piano, Epiphany carols, the message of Epiphany, and the very last chance to have a sneak peek, from afar, of the nave floor, before the contractors arrive, tomorrow.
