Buckets away!…a tale of a new roof
Progress at last!
Scaffolding shrouds the south east corner of the Priory. Work is underway.
The much-patched Victorian roof covering of St Anne’s chapel is being completely replaced. Over the years, rainwater has found its way through the temporary patches and some of the timbers have rotted. They’re being repaired and replaced, too.
For all of us in the Priory, the immediate result will be no more buckets to avoid in the chapel. But maybe more significantly, the rain water will once more drain away from the south wall, home to the precious mediaeval stained glass windows.
This work, by Loxstone, a specialist building restoration and conservation company from Redditch, marks the beginning of the project to conserve the mediaeval Creation Window.
As Rod, the Vicar says ‘Over £140,000 is being spent on the roof and afterwards, from the inside, it’ll look no different. But like our forebears, we’re custodians of this glorious building, which helps inspire faith and understanding now, and for generations to come.’
We’re really grateful for the support of the Friends of Malvern Priory, the Garfield Weston Trust, the Droitwich Preservation Trust and the Worcestershire and Dudley Historic Churches Trust. Thank you! We couldn’t have done it without you.
