Telling the Priory story
It’s Saturday morning… what do you do on a Saturday morning?
For the team of dedicated Priory volunteers, the answer’s easy! ‘Guided Tours’. There’s nothing they enjoy more than bringing the Priory’s 939 year long story to life.
The stones speak…
Look! there’s the join in the wall where the ‘old’ Priory (c1085) and the ‘new’ (mid 1400s) meet, when the Priory was extended.
And see those tilting courses of the stonework there? That’s almost certainly all that’s left after the original tower collapsed.
These tiles? Well, they’re mediaeval. One of the finest collections in the world, made by skilled craftsmen near the Priory and exported to other churches and cathedrals in Britain - have a look next time you’re in St David’s Cathedral, you’ll find Malvern tiles there. And in St Lenton’s Priory, Nottingham, too.
Don’t forget the windows! Simply the very best collection of English mediaeval stained glass in any parish church and second only to those in York Minster.
The stories…the anecdotes…the history… brought alive through the tours run by The Friends of Malvern Priory. Tours run every Saturday at 11am, for about an hour, for a suggested donation of £5 per person. You can book a place here. But if Saturday morning doesn’t suit, we may be able to make special arrangements.
Our tour guides would love to meet you to say ‘Welcome to Malvern Priory’ or maybe ‘Bienvenue au prieuré de Malvern’ - languages other than English may be available - and share the extraordinary history of this amazing place.
